  • A girl`s thing

In Uganda, like in many other countries, girls can be subjected to stigma or miss school due to the difficulty in managing their menstrual cycles, including the lack of access to female hygiene products. Many girls, drop out of school all together once they begin menstruating. This project is about a community of local women that I met in 2018 in Uganda while living there ,who help educate young girls about menstrual hygiene. They share information about the female reproductive system, address common menstruation myths and have an open dialogue about menstrual health. The story confronts taboos about menstruation and raises awareness by telling the stories of the girls I met in the village. It raises questions about the relationship between menstruation and education, addressing that, with the right tools, women can go beyond their reproductives organs and be more than a wife or mother.
